When the angels came… – Part 11

Assalamu Alaikum.

[Here are Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.]

We have a multitude of ahadeeth which show Jibreel (alaihissalaam) coming to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). However, it is important to remember that he only came down by the command of Allah.

Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu): The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “O Jibreel, what prevents you. from visiting us more often than you do?” Then this Verse was revealed:

“And we (angels) descend not except by the Command of your Lord (O Muhammad). To Him belongs what is before us and what is behind us, and what is between those two…” [Surah Maryam (19) : 64] until the end of the ayah (verse).

So this was the answer to Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 9, Hadeeth No. 547]

Sometimes, Jibreel (alaihissalaam) came in the form of Dihyah Al-Kalbi (a handsome companion) – and not everyone realised it.

Narrated Abu Uthman: I was informed that Jibreel came to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihu wasallam) while Umm Salamah was with him. Jibreel started talking (to the Prophet). Then the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) asked Umm Salamah, “Who is this?” She replied, “He is Dihyah (al-Kalbi).” When Jibreel had left, Umm Salamah said, “By Allah, I did not take him for anybody other than him (i.e. Dihyah) until I heard the sermon of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) wherein he informed about the news of Jibreel.”

The sub-narrator asked Abu Uthman: From whom have you heard that? Abu Uthman said: From Usamah bin Zaid. [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Hadeeth No. 503]

Many times, the people around could not see him. Aishah (radiallahu anha) was one of those but she got greeted by him.

Aishah (radiallahu anha) narrated that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to her “O Aishah, this is Jibreel and he sends his (greetings) salutations to you.” Aishah said, “Salutations (Greetings) to him, and Allah’s Mercy and Blessings be on him,” and addressing the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) she said, “You see what I don’t see.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Hadeeth No. 440]

What a great honour to be greeted by the greatest angel, subhan Allah.

Jibreel (alaihissalaam) was also the one who came down with an image of Aishah (radiallahu alaihi wasallam) to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam prior to their marriage (she was very young then).

Narrated Aishah (radiallahu anha) that Jibreel came to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihu wasallan) with her image upon a piece of green silk cloth, and he said: “This is your wife in the world, and in the Hereafter.” [Jaami At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 3880. Shaikh Al-Albani said it was “sahih” (authentic) apart from the his saying “and in the Hereafter.”]

Imran ibn Husain (radiallahu anhu) also got some greetings.

It was narrated that Mutarrif said: Imran bin Husain (radiallahu anhu) said to me: I am narrating to you a hadith by which Allah will benefit you (and the hadith is) that Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) combined Hajj and Umrah, and he did not forbid (this combination) till he died. (Moreover) nothing was revealed in the Quran which forbade it.

And I was always greeted until I was cauterised and then the greetings ceased. Then when I stopped cauterisation, the greetings returned. [Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth No. 2826]

But who was greeting him, you ask?

Narrated Imran ibn Husayn (radiallahu anhu): The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) forbade to cauterise; we cauterised but they (cauterisation) did not benefit us, nor proved useful for us.

Abu Dawud said: He used to hear the salutation of the angels: When he cauterized, it stopped. When he abandoned, it returned to him. [Sunan Abee Dawood, Hadeeth No. 3865. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

Yes, the angels were greeting him. Amazing, isn’t it?

[Note: Here’s the ruling on cauterisation.]

Jafar ibn Abee Talib (radiallahu anhu), the cousin of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), got something else with regards to the angels.

He, along with the Prophet’s (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) beloved Zaid ibn Al-Haarithah (radiallahu anhu), his adopted son (prior to the prohibition of adoption) and Abdullah ibn Rawahah were killed in the battle of Mutah.

Narrated Anas bin Malik (radiallahu anhu): The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallan) said, “Zaid took over the flag and was martyred. Then it was taken by Jafar who was martyred as well. Then Abdullah bin Rawahah took the flag but he too was martyred – and at that time the eyes of Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) were full of tears – then Khalid bin Al-Walid took the flag without being nominated as a chief (beforehand) and was blessed with victory.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadeeth No. 338]

Jafar (radiallahu anhu) had returned to Arabia the prior year after many years in Abyssinia (Ethiopia). During this battle, he lost both his right and left hands but Allah replaced his limbs with something better.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “I saw Jafar flying in Paradise with the angels.” [Jaami At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 3763. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

Narrated Ash-Shabi: Whenever Ibn Umar (radiallahu anhuma) greeted Ibn Jafar, he used to say: “As-salamu-Alaika (i.e. Peace be on you) O son of Dhul-Janahain (son of the two-winged person). [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Hadeeth No. 58]

This battle was one of many events that took place after the death of Sad ibn Muadh (radiallahu anhu) – something we covered in the previous part.

The conquest of Makkah came after this, and Quraish accepted Islam. That led many others to also become Muslim. Some tribes that did not accept Islam chose to fight the Muslims instead, which led to the Battle of Hunain.

The angels came to the Battle of Hunain

The Battle of Hunain did not begin well for the Muslims but they ended up prevailing.

Truly Allah has given you victory on many battle fields, and on the Day of Hunain (battle) when you rejoiced at your great number but it availed you naught and the earth, vast as it is, was straitened for you, then you turned back in flight. Then Allah did send down His Sakinah (calmness, tranquillity and reassurance, etc.) on the Messenger (Muhammad), and on the believers, and sent down forces (angels) which you saw not, and punished the disbelievers. Such is the recompense of disbelievers. [Surah At-Taubah (9) : 25 – 26]

Ibn Kathir states in his explanation of the second ayah (verse):

“(and sent down forces which you saw not,) this refers to angels. Imam Abu Jafar bin Jarir At-Tabari said that Al-Qasim narrated to them, that Al-Hasan bin Arafah said that Al-Mutamir bin Sulayman said from Awf bin Abi Jamilah Al-Arabi who said that he heard Abdur-Rahman, the freed slave of Ibn Barthan saying, “A man who participated in Hunayn with the idolators narrated to me, `When we met the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)and his Companions on the day of Hunayn, they did not remain in battle more than the time it takes to milk a sheep! When we defeated them, we pursued them until we ended at the rider of the white mule, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). At that time, men with white handsome faces intercepted us and said: `Disgraced be the faces! Go back. So we ran away, but they followed us. That was the end for us.”‘

So, the angels were sent to this battle as well. With regards to fighting, perhaps they only fought at Badr. They do not seem to have fought at Uhud or Hunain, and Allah knows Best.

Jibreel came to review the Quran twice with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) in his final Ramadan

Jibreel (alaihi assalam) used to come every Ramadan to review the Quran with the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).

Narrated Ubaid ibn  Abdullah ibn Utbah that Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu) said: The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was the most generous amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Jibreel visited him, and Jibreel (alaihissalaam) used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) used to recite the Quran to Jibreel, and when Jibreel met him, he used to be more generous than a fast wind (which causes rain and welfare). [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 3, Hadeeth No. 126]

He also came to him in Ramadan to tell him about Laylatul Qadr.

Narrated Abu Salamah: Once I went to Abu- Said Al-Khudri (radiallahu anhu) and asked him, “Won’t you come with us to the date-palm trees to have a talk?” So Abu Said went out and I asked him, “Tell me what you heard from the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) about the Night of Qadr.” Abu Said replied, “Once Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) performed Itikaf (seclusion) on the first ten days of the month of Ramadan and we did the same with him.

Jibreel came to him and said, ‘The night you are looking for is ahead of you.’ So the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) performed Itikaf in the middle (second) ten days of the month of Ramadan and we too performed Itikaf with him.

Jibreel came to him and said, ‘The night which you are looking for is ahead of you.’ In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) delivered a sermon saying, ‘Whoever has performed Itikaf with me should continue it. I have been shown the Night of “Qadr”, but have forgotten its date, but it is in the odd nights of the last ten nights. I saw in my dream that I was prostrating in mud and water.’

In those days the roof of the mosque was made of branches of date-palm trees. At that time the sky was clear and no cloud was visible, but suddenly a cloud came and it rained. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) led us in the prayer and I saw the traces of mud on the forehead and on the nose of Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). So it was the confirmation of that dream.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Hadeeth No. 777]

In the Prophet’s final Ramadan though, Jibreel (alaihissalaam) reviewed the Quran with him twice.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu): Jibreel used to repeat the recitation of the Quran with the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) once a year, but he repeated it twice with him in the year he died. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) used to stay in Itikaf for ten days every year (in the month of Ramadan), but in the year of his death, he stayed in Itikaf for twenty days. [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Hadeeth No. 520]

This seems to have been a portent of the Prophet’s (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) death.

Narrated Aishah (radiallahu anha): Once Fatimah came walking and her gait resembled the gait of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) . The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Welcome, O my daughter!” Then he made her sit on his right or on his left side, and then he told her a secret and she started weeping.

I asked her, “Why are you weeping?” He again told her a secret and she started laughing. I said, “I never saw happiness so near to sadness as I saw today.” I asked her what the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) had told her. She said, “I would never disclose the secret of Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).”

When the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) died, I asked her about it. She replied. “The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: ‘Every year Jibreel used to revise the Quran with me once only, but this year he has done so twice. I think this portends my death, and you will be the first of my family to follow me.’ So I started weeping. Then he said. ‘Don’t you like to be the chief of all the ladies of Paradise or the chief of the believing women? So I laughed for that.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Hadeeth No. 819]
