When the angels came… – Part 10

Assalamu Alaikum.

[Here are Parts 12345, 6, 7, 8 and 9.]

Plenty of events took place between the Battle of Uhud and the Battle of Trench (also referred to as the Battle of the Confederates (Al-Ahzab)).

One of them was the incident of Bir Maunah and it involved Amir bin Fuhairah (radiallahu anhu), who helped the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and Abu Bakr (radiallahu anhu) during their migration to Madinah.

Narrated Aishah (radiallahu anha): Abu Bakr asked the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) to allow him to go out (of Makkah) when he was greatly annoyed (by the infidels). But the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to him, ”Wait.” Abu Bakr said, O Allah’s Messenger! Do you hope that you will be allowed (to migrate)?” Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) replied, “I hope so.” So Abu Bakr waited for him till one day Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) came at noon time and addressed him saying “Let whoever is present with you, now leave you.” Abu Bakr said, “None is present but my two daughters.” The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Have you noticed that I have been allowed to go out (to migrate)?” Abu Bakr said, “O Allah’s Messenger, I would like to accompany you.” The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “You will accompany me.” Abu Bakr said, “O Allah’s Messenger! I have got two she-camels which I had prepared and kept ready for (our) going out.” So he gave one of the two (she-camels) to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and it was Al-Jada . They both rode and proceeded till they reached the Cave at the mountain of Thaur where they hid themselves. Amir bin Fuhairah was the slave of Abdullah bin at-Tufail bin Sakhbarah, Aishah’s brother from her mother’s side. Abu Bakr had a milch she-camel. Amir used to go with it (i.e. the milch she-camel) in the afternoon and come back to them before noon by setting out towards them in the early morning when it was still dark and then he would take it to the pasture so that none of the shepherds would be aware of his job. When the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) (and Abu Bakr) went away (from the Cave), he (i.e. Amir) too went along with them and they both used to make him ride at the back of their camels in turns till they reached Madinah. Amir bin Fuhairah was martyred on the day of Bir Maunah.

Narrated Urwah: When those (Muslims) at Bir Maunah were martyred and Amr bin Umaiyah Ad- Damri was taken prisoner, Amir bin at-Tufail, pointing at a killed person, asked Amr, “Who is this?” Amr bin Umaiyah said to him, “He is Amir bin Fuhairah.” Amir bin at-Tufail said, “I saw him lifted to the sky after he was killed till I saw the sky between him and the earth, and then he was brought down upon the earth. Then the news of the killed Muslims reached the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and he announced the news of their death saying, “Your companions (of Bir Maunah) have been killed, and they have asked their Lord saying, ‘O our Lord! Inform our brothers about us as we are pleased with You and You are pleased with us.” So Allah informed them (i.e. the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and his companions) about them (i.e. martyrs of Bir Maunah). On that day, Urwah bin Asma bin As-Salt who was one of them, was killed, and Urwah (bin Az- Zubair) was named after Urwah bin Asma bin As-Salt and Mundhir (bin Az Zubair) was named after Mundhir bin Amr (who had also been martyred on that day). [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Hadeeth No. 419]

[Note: Urwah and Mundhir, the sons of Az-Zubair (radiallahu anhu) were the nephews of Aishah (radiallahu anha) as their mother Asma (radiallahu anha) was her sister.]

In his book of Seerah, Ibn Kathir states the following about Amr ibn Fuhairah (radiallahu anhu):

“In the Maghazi, the military chronicle of Musa ibn Uqbah, Urwah is quoted as saying: “The body of Amir ibn Fuhairah was not found; it is send that the angels hid it.””

They hid him from the pagans, subhan Allah. It seems that they were the ones that carried his body up as mentioned in the hadeeth. It was also said that the angels buried him.

The Angels came to aid the believers in the Battle of the Trench

Allah says:

O you who believe! Remember Allah’s Favour to you, when there came against you hosts, and We sent against them a wind and forces that you saw not [i.e. troops of angels during the battle of Al-Ahzab (the Confederates)]. And Allah is Ever All Seer of what you do. [Surah Al-Ahzab (33) : 9]

Imam Ibn Kathir (rahimahullah) states in his explanation of the above ayah (verse):

“Allah tells us of the blessings and favors He bestowed upon His believing servants when He diverted their enemies and defeated them in the year when they gathered together and plotted. That was the year of Al-Khandaq, in Shawwal of the year 5 AH according to the well-known correct view. Musa bin Uqbah and others said that it was in the year 4 AH. The reason why the Confederates came was that a group of the leaders of the Jews of Banu Nadir, whom the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) had expelled from Al-Madinah to Khaybar, including Sallam bin Abu Al-Huqayq, Sallam bin Mishkam and Kinanah bin Ar-Rabi, went to Makkah where they met with the leaders of Quraysh and incited them to make war against the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). They promised that they would give them help and support, and Quraysh agreed to that. Then they went to the Ghatafan tribe with the same call, and they responded too. The Quraysh came out with their company of men from various tribes and their followers, under the leadership of Abu Sufyan Sakhr bin Harb. The Ghatafan were led by Uyaynah bin Hisn bin Badr. In all they numbered nearly ten thousand. When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) heard that they had set out, he commanded the Muslims to dig a ditch (Khandaq) around Al-Madinah from the east. This was on the advice of Salman Al-Farisi, may Allah be pleased with him. So the Muslims did this, working hard, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) worked with them, carrying earth away and digging, in the process of which there occurred many miracles and clear signs. The idolators came and made camp to the north of Al-Madinah, near Uhud, and some of them camped on the high ground overlooking Al-Madinah, as Allah says:

(When they came upon you from above you and from below you,) The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) came out with the believers, who numbered nearly three thousand, or it was said that they numbered seven hundred. They had their backs towards (the mountain of) Sal and were facing the enemy, and the ditch, in which there was no water, was between the two groups, preventing the cavalry and infantry from reaching them. The women and children were in the strongholds of Al-Madinah. Banu Quraidhah, who were a group among the Jews, had a fortress in the south-east of Al-Madinah, and they had made a treaty with the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and were under his protection. They numbered nearly eight hundred fighters. Huyay bin Akhtab An-Nadari went to them and kept trying to persuade them until they broke the treaty and went over to the side of the Confederates against the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). The crisis deepened and things got worse, as Allah says:

(There, the believers were tried and shaken with a mighty shaking.) 33: 11 They besieged the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and his Companions for almost a month, but they did not reach them and there was no fighting between them, except for when Amr bin Abd Wadd Al-Amiri, who was one of the most famous and bravest horsemen of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era), came with some other horsemen, and crossed the ditch to the Muslim side. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) called for the Muslim cavalry, and it was said that no one came forward. Then he called Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who came forward and they fought in single combat until Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, killed him, and this was a sign of imminent victory. Then Allah sent an intensely cold wind with strong gusts against the Confederates, and they were left with no tents or anything else; they could not light any fires or do anything, and so they departed, disappointed and defeated, as Allah says:

(O you who believe! Remember Allah’s favor to you, when there came against you hosts, and We sent against them a wind and forces) Mujahid said: “This was the easterly wind.” This view is supported by another Hadith:

(I was given victory by the easterly wind, and Ad were destroyed by the westerly wind.)

(and forces that you saw not.) This refers to the angels who shook them and cast fear and terror into their hearts. The chief of each tribe said, “O Banu so-and-so, to me!” So they gathered around him, and he said, “Let us save ourselves,” when Allah cast fear and terror into their hearts.”

Jibreel (alaihissalaam) came to tell the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) to march towards Banu Quraidhah

Banu Quraidah had breached the treaty between them and the Muslims during the Battle of the Trench.

Narrated Aishah (radiallahu anha): When the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) returned from Al-Khandaq (i.e. Trench) and laid down his arms and took a bath, Jibreel (alaihissalaam) came and said (to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) ), You have laid down your arms? By Allah, we angels have not laid them down yet. So set out for them.” The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Where to go?” He (Jibreel) said, “Towards this side,” pointing towards Banu Quraidhah. So the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) went out towards them. [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Hadeeth No. 443]

Jibreel’s (alaihissalaam) head was covered with dust.

Narrated Aishah (radiallahu anhu): When Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) returned on the day (of the battle) of Al-Khandaq (i.e. Trench), he put down his arms and took a bath. Then Jibreel (alaihissalaam) whose head was covered with dust, came to him saying, “You have put down your arms! By Allah, I have not put down my arms yet.” Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Where (to go now)?” Jibreel said, “This way,” pointing towards the tribe of Bani Quraiza. So Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) went out towards them. [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Hadeeth No. 68]

The angels marched towards Banu Quraidhah causing dust to rise in the street.

Narrated Anas (radiallahu anhu): As if I am just now looking at the dust rising in the street of Banu Ghanm (in Medina) because of the marching of Jibreel’s (alaihissalaam) regiment when Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) set out to Banu Quraidhah (to attack them). [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Hadeeth No. 444]

Jibreel (radiallahu anhu) supported Hassam ibn Thabit (radiallahu anhu) when he lampooned the disbelievers with his poems during this siege.

Narrated Al-Baraa (radiallahu anhu): The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to Hassan, “Abuse them (with your poems), and Jibreel is with you (i.e. supports you).”

(Through another group of sub narrators) Al-Baraa bin Azib (radiallahu anhu) said, “On the day of Quraidhah’s (siege), Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said to Hassan bin Thabit, ‘Abuse them (with your poems), and Jibreel is with you (i.e. supports you).’ ” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Hadeeth No. 449]

Banu Quraidhah accepted the judgment of Saad ibn Muadh (radiallahu anhu). Here is the full story.

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri (radiallahu anhu): Some people (i.e. the Jews of Banu Quraidhah) agreed to accept the verdict of Saad bin Muadh so the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) sent for him. He came riding a donkey, and when he approached the masjid, the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Get up for the best amongst you.” or said, “Get up for your chief.” Then the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “O Saad! These people have agreed to accept your verdict.” Saad said, “I judge that their warriors should be killed and their children and women should be taken as captives.” The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “You have given a judgment similar to Allah’s Judgment (or the King’s judgment). [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Hadeeth No. 148]

Sadly, he died after that from a wound he had incurred earlier.

Narrated Aishah (radiallahu anha): Saad was wounded on the day of Khandaq (i.e. Trench) when a man from Quraish, called Hibban bin Al-Araqa hit him (with an arrow). The man was Hibban bin Qais from (the tribe of) Bani Mais bin Amir bin Luai who shot an arrow at Saad’s medial arm vein (or main artery of the arm). The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) pitched a tent (for Saad) in the masjid so that he might be near to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) to visit. When the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) returned from the (battle) of Al-Khandaq (i.e. Trench) and laid down his arms and took a bath Jibreel came to him while he (i.e. Jibreel) was shaking the dust off his head, and said, “You have laid down the arms?” By Allah, I have not laid them down. Go out to them (to attack them).” The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Where?” Jibreel pointed towards Bani Quraidhah. So Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) went to them (i.e. Banu Quraidhah) (i.e. besieged them). They then surrendered to the Prophet’s (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) judgment but he directed them to Saad to give his verdict concerning them. Saaad said, “I give my judgment that their warriors should be killed, their women and children should be taken as captives, and their properties distributed.” Narrated Hisham: My father informed me that Aishah said, “Saad said, “O Allah! You know that there is nothing more beloved to me than to fight in Your Cause against those who disbelieved Your Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and turned him out (of Makkah). O Allah! I think you have put to an end the fight between us and them (i.e. Quraish infidels). And if there still remains any fight with the Quraish (infidels), then keep me alive till I fight against them for Your Sake. But if you have brought the war to an end, then let this wound burst and cause my death thereby.’ So blood gushed from the wound. There was a tent in the masjid belonging to Banu Ghifar who were surprised by the blood flowing towards them . They said, ‘O people of the tent! What is this thing which is coming to us from your side?’ Behold! Blood was flowing profusely out of Saad’s wound. Saad then died because of that.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Hadeeth No. 448]

70,000 angels came to attend the funeral of Saad ibn Muadh (radiallahu anhu)

Saad ibn Muadh (radiallahu anhu) was a very righteous man. The Throne shook (in joy) when he died (as a form of welcome).

Narrated Jaabir (radiallahu anhu): I heard the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) saying, “The Throne (of Allah) shook at the death of Saad bin Muadh.” Through another group of narrators, Jaabir added, “I heard the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam): saying, ‘The Throne of Ar-Rahman (the Beneficent) shook because of the death of Saad bin Muadh.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Hadeeth No. 147]

Also, the angels attended his funeral.

It was narrated from Ibn Umar (radiallahu anhuma) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: This is the one at whose death the Throne shook, the gates of heaven were opened for him and seventy thousand angels attended his funeral. He was squeezed once, then released.” [Sunan An-Nasai, Hadeeth No. 2057. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

Ibn Kathir mentions some narrations in his Seerah that suggest that these angels had never descended to earth before, and Allah knows Better.

The angels also carried his bier.

Narrated Anas bin Malik (radiallahu anhu): “When the bier of Saad bin Muadh was carried, the hypocrites said: ‘How light his bier is.’ And this was due to his judgment concerning Banu Quraidhah. So this reached the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), and he said: ‘Indeed, the angels were carrying him.'” [Jaami At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 3849. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

Those were not his only virtues though.

Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu)narrated that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasalam) said, “If anyone were to be saved from the trial of the grave, it would have been Saad ibn Muadh. He was given a mighty squeezing, but then he was relaxed.” [Sahih Al-Jaami, Hadeeth No. 5306]
