Assalamu Alaikum.

The title of the post sounds like a fanstasy, doesn’t it?

Except that it’s not a fantasy at all. Someone once actually heard a voice from the clouds. Here’s the story:

Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) reported: The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “While a man was walking through a barren land, he heard a voice coming out of a cloud saying: ‘Irrigate the garden of so-and- so.’ Thereupon the cloud drifted in a certain direction and discharged its water over a rocky plain. The streamlets flowed into a channel. This man followed the channel until it reached a garden and he saw the owner of the garden standing in its center, working with his spade spreading the water (changing the course of the water). He asked him: “O slave of Allah, what is your name?” He told his name, which was the same that he heard from the cloud. The owner of the garden then asked him: “O slave of Allah, why did you ask my name?” He replied: “I heard a voice from a cloud which poured down this water saying: ‘Irrigate the garden of so-and-so.’ I would like to know what do you do with it.” He said: “Now that you asked me, I will tell you. I estimate the produce of the garden and distribute one-third of it in charity, I spend one-third on myself and my family and invest one-third back into the garden.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth No. 7112]

Whose voice was it, you wonder?

It would appear to be that of the angel in charge of the clouds.

There are two things mentioned in this hadeeth that are very relevent to today – the issue of rizq (provision) and giving charity.

This year, the whole planet is having exactly the same problem: COVID-19 i.e. the coronavirus. Lots of people have lost their jobs and others have gotten salary cuts.

It’s at times like this that we need to remember that rizq (provision) ultimately comes from Allah. In this hadeeth, an angel was sent to redirect the clouds to rain on that garden! Subhan Allah, this is the power of Allah.

There are many other reminders in the Quran and Sunnah that rizq is from Allah (and that the best type of rizq is Islamic knowledge, as opposed to money). And we need each and every one of those because this coronavirus has the whole planet worried about how they will provide for themselves and their families if this pandemic drags on.

Well, it ultimately doesn’t matter because Allah is the One who provides. We shouldn’t ever forget that.

And no (moving) living creature is there on earth but its provision is due from Allah. And He knows its dwelling place and its deposit (in the uterous, grave, etc.). all is in a Clear Book (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz – the Book of Decrees with Allah). [Surah Hud (11) : 6]

To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth, He enlarges provision for whom He wills, and straitens (it for whom He wills). Verily! He is the All-Knower of everything. [Surah Ash-Shura (42) : 12]

And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).

I seek not any provision from them (i.e. provision for themselves or for My creatures) nor do I ask that they should feed Me (i.e. feed themselves or My creatures).

Verily, Allah is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong. [Surah Adh-Dhaariyaat (51) : 56 – 58]

Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). (Saying): “We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)!  Nay, but we are deprived!”

Tell Me! The water that you drink. Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)?

Tell Me! The fire which you kindle. Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.

[Surah Al-Waaqiah (56) : 63 – 74]

Everyone needs to ask Allah for their rizq.

Abu Dharr (radiallahu anhu) reported Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: “O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you, O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefitting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My dominion in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My dominion in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more that a needle decreases the sea if put into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I record for you and then recompense you for. So let him who finds good, praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth No. 6246]

After asking Allah, one strives for their rizq whilst putting their trust in Him.

Abu Tamim Al-Jaishani narrated he heard Umar (radiallahu anhu) say: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) say: ‘If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, you would be given provision like the birds: They go out hungry in the morning and come back with full bellies in the evening.” [Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadeeth No. 4164. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Shaikh Al-Albani.]

Allah is the One who provides from sources that we could never have imagined – but first, we need to be obedient to Him.

Then when they are about to fulfil their term appointed, either take them back in a good manner or part with them in a good manner. And take for witness two just persons from among you (Muslims). And establish the witness for Allah. That will be an admonition given to him who believes in Allah and the Last Day. And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).

And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things. [Surah At-Talaq (65) : 2 – 3]

We should never become like those who deny the Favours of Allah.

And instead (of thanking Allah) for the provision He gives you, on the contrary, you deny Him (by disbelief)! [Surah Al-Waaqiah (56) : 82]

Narrated Zaid bin Khalid (radiallahu anhu): We went out with Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) in the year of Al-Hudaibiyah. One night it rained and Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) led us in the Fajr prayer and (after finishing it), turned to us and said, “Do you know what your Lord has said?” We replied, “Allah and His Messenger know it better.” He said, “Allah said: “(Some of) My slaves got up believing in Me, And (some of them) disbelieving in Me. The one who said: We have been given Rain through Allah’s Mercy and Allah’s Blessing and Allah’s Bounty, then he is a believer in Me, and is a disbeliever in the star. And whoever said: We have been given rain because of such and- such star, then he is a believer in the star, and is a disbeliever in Me.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Hadeeth No. 468]

Unfortunately, most of mankind is not thankful to Allah.

Allah, it is He Who has made the night for you that you may rest therein and the day for you to see. Truly, Allah is full of Bounty to mankind, yet most of mankind give no thanks. [Surah Ghaafir (40) : 61]

So, we need to be grateful to Allah and remember that He is the One that provides. And gratitude is an act that causes one to be granted more.

And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe.” [Surah Ibrahim (14) : 7]

Apart from rizq, the hadeeth about the voice in the clouds also mentions giving in charity. This is another issue that is both relevant to the Covid era as well as the current month i.e. Ramadan.

Let’s start with its relevance to Ramadan – it is the month of charity.

Narrated Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu): “Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was the most generous of all the people, and he used to reach the peak in generosity in the month of Ramadan when Jibreel met him. Jibreel used to meet him every night of Ramadan to teach him the Quran. Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was the most generous person, even more generous than the strong uncontrollable wind (in readiness and haste to do charitable deeds).” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Hadeeth No. 5]

However, in the covid era, many people are stuck in their homes and aren’t earning any money so they might not want to give charity out of fear that they might get poor.

Well, first of all, giving charity in times of hardship is one of the signs of the righteous.

And march forth in the way (which leads to) forgiveness from your Lord, and for Paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for Al-Muttaqoon (the pious). Those who spend [in Allah’s Cause – deeds of charity, alms, etc.] in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allah loves Al-Muhsinoon (the good doers). [Surah Aal-Imran (3): 133-134]

Also, that “little” charity could end up as big as a mountain.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu): Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “If one give in charity what equals one date-fruit from the honestly earned money, and Allah accepts only the honestly earned money, Allah takes it in His Right (Hand) and then enlarges its reward for that person (who has given it), as anyone of you brings up his baby horse, so much so that it becomes as big as a mountain. [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadeeth No. 491]

Secondly, the hadeeth, about the voice in the clouds, clearly shows that charity INCREASES a person’s wealth and does not decrease it.

And this hadeeth isn’t the only proof that charity increases and blesses one’s wealth, rather there are many more proofs.

The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He pleases. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower. [Surah Al-Baqarah (2)  : 261]

Allah will destroy riba (interest) and will give increase for sadaqaat (deeds of charity, alms, etc.) And Allah likes not the disbelievers, sinners. [Surah Al-Baqarah (2) : 276]

Taking interest is a very big sin yet people don’t seem to realise that it removes blessings from a person’s wealth (not to mention opening them up to the punishment of Allah).

Giving charity, on the other hand, is a great act of worship that is mentioned numerous times in the Quran and the Sunnah.

Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) reported Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying: Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives, Allah adds to his respect, and the one who shows humility Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people). [Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth No. 6264]

Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Every day two angels descend and one of them says, ‘O Allah! Compensate (more) to the person who gives (in charity)’; while the other one says, ‘O Allah! Destroy the one who withholds (charity, etc)”. [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadeeth No. 522]

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu): Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Allah said, ‘O son of Adam! Spend, and I shall spend on you.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Hadeeth No. 264]

So, the hadeeth of the voice in the clouds and these other proofs show us a simple way to increase our wealth in this Covid era (and in any era, really) – by giving in charity.

So, go ahead and pay your zakaah and give in charity as soon as you can, before the coming of two days:

1. A day when there will be nobody to accept that zakaah and charity from you because everyone will have wealth!

Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) reported Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying: The Last Hour will not come before wealth becomes abundant and overflowing, so much so that a man takes zakaah out of his property and cannot find anyone to accept it from him and till the land of Arabia becomes meadows and rivers. [Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth No. 2208]

Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) reported Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying: The Last Hour will not come till wealth is abundant and overflowing, so much so that the owner of the property will think as to who will accept sadaqah (charity) from him, and a person would be called to accept sadaqah and he would say: I do not need it. [Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth No. 2209]

Narrated Haritha bin Wahab (radiallahu anhu): I heard the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) saying, “O people! Give in charity as a time will come upon you when a person will wander about with his charity and will not find anybody to accept it, and one (who will be requested to take it) will say, “If you had brought it yesterday, would have taken it, but today I am not in need of it.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadeeth No. 492]

2. The day of one’s death.

And spend (in charity) of that with which We have provided you, before death comes to one of you and he says: “My Lord! If only You would give me respite for a little while (i.e. return to the worldly life), then I should give Sadaqah (i.e. Zakah) of my wealth, and be among the righteous.

And Allah grants respite to none when his appointed time (death) comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do. [Surah Al-Munafiqoon (63) : 10 – 11]
