Assalamu Alaikum.

In Surah Al-Ahqaf, Allah mentions the total gestation and weaning period of a woman.

And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bears him with hardship and she brings him forth with hardship, and the bearing of him, and the weaning of him is thirty (30) months, till when he attains full strength and reaches forty years, he says: “My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds, such as please You, and make my off-spring good. Truly, I have turned to You in repentance, and truly, I am one of the Muslims (submitting to Your Will).” [Surah Al-Ahqaf (46) : 15]

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah mentions the length that the mothers should suckle their children. [This is the time period within which babies suckled by the same woman will become mahram to each other.]

The mothers shall give suck to their children for two whole years, (that is) for those (parents) who desire to complete the term of suckling, but the father of the child shall bear the cost of the mother’s food and clothing on a reasonable basis. No person shall have a burden laid on him greater than he can bear. No mother shall be treated unfairly on account of her child, nor father on account of his child. And on the (father’s) heir is incumbent the like of that (which was incumbent on the father). If they both decide on weaning, by mutual consent, and after due consultation, there is no sin on them. And if you decide on a foster suckling-mother for your children, there is no sin on you, provided you pay (the mother) what you agreed (to give her) on reasonable basis. And fear Allah and know that Allah is All-Seer of what you do. [Surah Al-Baqarah (2) : 233]

Now, let’s do the math.

A women generally gives birth at 9 months. If she then suckles the baby for 2 years (which is 24 months) that is 9+24 = 33 months.

However, Allah says that the gestation period and weaning is 30 months. What about the other 3 months?

The genius that is Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhuma), the cousin of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and the explainer of the Quran explained it for us.

Imam Ibn Kathir (rahimallahu) quotes Ibn Abbas’ (radiallahu anhuma) in his explanation of the first verse:

“Ibn Abi Hatim related from his father that Farwah bin Abi Al-Maghra told them that Ali bin Mushir narrated to them from Dawud bin Abi Hind, who narrated from Ikrimah that Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “When a woman delivers after nine months, the baby will only need twenty-one months of suckling. When she delivers after seven months, the baby will need twenty-three months of suckling. When she delivers after six months, the baby will need two full years of suckling, because Allah says,

(and his gestation and weaning is thirty months, till when he attains full strength).”

Subhan Allah, that’s interesting, isn’t it?

And that’s not all that can be derived from the two numbers mentioned. Ibn Kathir also mentions the following:

(And (the period of) his gestation and weaning is thirty months,) Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, used this Ayah along with the following two Ayat to prove that the minimum period of pregnancy (gestation) is six months:

(And his weaning is in two years.) (31:14) and

(The mothers suckle their children two complete years — for those who desire to complete the term of suckling. ) (2:233) This is a strong and valid conclusion, and it was approved by Uthman and a number of the Companions.”

The story that follows this part explains this issue, but it is a weak narration so I won’t quote it here. Ali (radiallahu anhu) came to this conclusion by subtracting the numbers. So 30-24 = 6 months.

Subhan Allah, and this is true. Only a few babies have known to have a smaller gestation period and it was only a little less than 6 months (according to what was claimed anyway).

So, that’s the amount of time that a mother weans her child.

Yet, another issue for mothers is that babies urinate a lot. [Complete understatement I know.]vWhat happens though if when that gets on one’s clothes? Can one pray with those clothes on without removing the urine?

The answer is no. However, there is a difference between the way the baby boy’s urine is removed (from the clothes) as compared to the way a baby girl’s urine is removed – that is if they are both not eating anything (other than their mother’s milk obviously).

Ali ibn Abee Taalib (radiallahu anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, about urine of a male child that suckles: “The urine of the boy is sprinkled, and the girl’s urine is washed.” Qatadah (one of the narrators) said: “This is so, as long as they do not eat, when they eat, then both of them are washed.” [Jaami At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth  No. 610. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

The issue of the baby boy (who hasn’t started eating food) is further proven in the following story.

Narrated Umm Qais bint Mihsan (radiallahu anha): I brought my young son, who had not started eating food to Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) who took him and made him sit in his lap. The child urinated on the garment of the Prophet, so he asked for water and poured it over the soiled (area) and did not wash it. [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Hadeeth No. 223]

[Just look at the reaction of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). He was so calm. Compare that to all the screaming that happens today when people get urinated on by other people’s children!]

Now, someone might ask, “Why is that? Why is there a difference?”

First of all, we were commanded to hear and obey. So, whenever Allah has ordered us to do something or prohibited us from doing something, we need to obey even if we don’t understand why. Allah is Al-Hakeem (The All-Wise) so His Wisdom is all-encompassing whereas our understanding is very limited.

Secondly, a person might obey the ruling but might be interested in the wisdom so as to increase their iman (faith).

Well, I’ve come across different wisdoms mentioned for this issue. One is that baby boys are carried around a lot more (which is mentioned here). One of my teachers also mentioned something about the baby boy’s urine splattering around. [I found that mentioned in this article along with other wisdoms.]

Then I came across this article which quoted Imam As-Shafi (rahimahullah). I found his reasoning to be very interesting.

The quote is mentioned right after a narration of this hadeeth. [I’ve put it in green.]

It was narrated from Ali (radiallahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said concerning the urine of a nursing infant: “Water should be sprinkled over the urine of a boy, and the urine of a girl should be washed.”

Abul-Hasan bin Salamah said: “Ahmad bin Musa bin Maqil narrated to us that Abul-Yaman Al-Misri said: ‘I asked Shafi about the Hadith of the Prophet, “Water should be sprinkled over the urine of a baby boy, and the urine of a baby girl should be washed,” when the two types of water (urine) are the same. He said, “This is because the urine of the boy is of water and clay, but the urine of the girl is of flesh and blood.” Then he said to me: “Did you understand?” I said: “No.” He said: “When Allah the Most High created Adam, He created Eve (Hawwa) from his short rib, so the boy’s urine is from water and clay, and the girl’s urine is from flesh and blood.” Then he said to me: “Did you understand?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “May Allah cause you benefit from this.” [Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadeeth No. 525. The hadeeth itself was graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

Amazing, isn’t it?

For those that didn’t understand, let me explain it step by step (the article quoted didn’t do that).

So, first, how was Adam (alaihissalam), the first man, created?

Verily, the likeness of Isa (Jesus) before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: “Be!” – and he was. [Surah Aal-Imran (3) : 59]

Thereof (the earth) We created you, and into it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you out once again. [Surah Ta-Ha (20) : 55]

That is He, the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. Who made everything He has created good, and He began the creation of man from clay. [Surah As-Sajdah (32) : 6-7]

He created man (Adam) from sounding clay like the clay of pottery. [Surah Ar-Rahman (55) : 14]

Abu Musa al-Ashari (radiallahu anhu) reported the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying: Allah created Adam from a handful which he took from the whole of the earth ; so the children of Adam are in accordance with the earth: some red, some white, some black, some a mixture, also smooth and rough, bad and good. [Sunan Abee Dawood, Hadeeth No. 4693. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

The above proofs mention earth, dust and clay which might seem confusing to some, but there is no contradiction.

Shaikh Saleh Al-Munajjid says in this article:

“This is how Adam was created: from the earth – i.e. from its dust – which was then mixed with water to form mud, which then became black, stinking mud. And this dust was created from the earth which is partly sand and when it is mixed it becomes sounding clay like the clay of pottery.

Hence when Allah describes the creation of Adam in the Quran, in each case He describes one of the stages through which his creation passed and through which the mud was formed. So there is no contradiction in the verses of the Quran.”

So, that was the creation of Adam (alaihissalam). What about the creation of Hawwa (radiallahu anha)?

O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever an All-Watcher over you. [Surah An-Nisaa (4) : 1]

Ibn Kathir says the following in his book, Stories of the Prophets, in the Story of Adam and Hawwa:

“However, Suddi has narrated through Abu Salih and Abu Malik from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Masud and also from some other Companions who said: Iblis (Satan) was expelled from Paradise and Adam was made to dwell in it. He wandered through it alone as he had no partner in whom he could seek his comfort. However, once he slept and when he woke up, he found a woman sitting near his head, whom Allah had created from his rib. Adam asked her: “What are you?” She replied: “A woman.” He asked her again: “What are you created for?” She answered: “So you could seek comfort in me.” Angels who were well aware of the extent of the knowledge of Adam asked: “What is her name  O Adam?” He said: “Eve (Hawwa).” They asked him: “Why is it Hawwa?” Adam replied: “Because she was created from something living.

Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated from Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhuma): She was created from the shortest rib of his left side while he was sleeping, then its place was dressed (bandaged) with flesh.”

There is also an authentic hadeeth that proves that Hawwa (radiallahu anha) was created from a rib.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu): Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Treat women nicely, for a women is created from a rib, and the most curved portion of the rib is its upper portion, so, if you should try to straighten it, it will break, but if you leave it as it is, it will remain crooked. So treat women nicely.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Hadeeth No. 548]

So, Adam (alaihissalam) was created from water and clay and Hawwa (radiallahu anha) was created from flesh and blood.

Now, water is pure (unless one of its characteristics change), which is obvious because we do wudhu (ablution) with it.

The earth (from which Adam (alaihissalam) was made) is also pure which is why tayammum (dry ablution) is sanctioned when there is no water available.

Abu Dharr (radiallahu anhu) narrated that AlIah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Pure clean earth is a purifier for the Muslim; even if he did not find water for ten years. Then if he finds water, then let him use it (for purification) on his skin. For, that is better.” [Jaami At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 124. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

In fact, tayammum (dry ablution) was something that was only given to our Ummah (nation):

Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (radiallahu anhu) reported: The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: I have been conferred upon five (things) which were not granted to anyone before me (and these are): Every Prophet was sent particularly to his own people, whereas I have been sent to all the red and the black the spoils of war have been made lawful for me, and these were never made lawful to anyone before me, and the earth has been made sacred and pure and a mosque for me, so whenever the time of prayer comes for any one of you he should pray whenever he is, and I have been supported by awe (by which the enemy is overwhelmed) from the distance (which one takes) one month to cover and I have been granted intercession. [Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth No. 1058]

Now, one should note that water is still sprinkled over the place where the baby boy urinated. So, his urine is not pure, unlike water and dust, but it has a lesser level of impurity than other impurities.

“Impure” means something that needs to be removed from one’s body, clothes and prayer place before prayer.

Blood is generally considered impure. I say “generally” because the scholars differed about some issues regarding different types of blood (e.g. blood of fish) and also the quantity (i.e. small vs large amounts of blood).

The proof used to show the impurity of blood is the following ayah (verse):

Say (O Muhammad): “I find not in that which has been inspired to me anything forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be Maytatah (a dead animal) or blood poured forth (by slaughtering or the like), or the flesh of swine (pork, etc.) for that surely is impure, or impious (unlawful) meat (of an animal) which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah (or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., or on which Allah’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). But whosoever is forced by necessity without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, (for him) certainly, your Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Surah Al-Anaam (6) : 145]

The following hadeeth is also another proof:

Narrated Asma bint Abee Bakr (radiallahu anhuma): A woman asked Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), “O Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)! What should we do, if the blood of menses falls on our clothes?” Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) replied, “If the blood of menses falls on the garment of anyone of you, she must take hold of the blood spot, rub it, and wash it with water and then pray in (with it). [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Hadeeth No. 304]

Please note that we might consider something “dirty” but that doesn’t make it impure. For example, sand is not impure (as proven by the hadeeth about tayammum) and neither are cats!

Narrated Aishah (radiallahu anha), Ummul Muminin (Mother of the Believers): Dawud ibn Salih ibn Dinar at-Tammar quoted his mother as saying that her mistress sent her with some pudding (harisah) to Aishah who was offering prayer. She made a sign to me to place it down. A cat came and ate some of it, but when Aishah finished her prayer, she ate from the place where the cat had eaten. She stated: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: It is not unclean: it is one of those who go round among you. She added: I saw the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) performing ablution from the water left over by the cat. [Sunan Abee Dawood, Hadeeth No. 76. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

It was narrated from Kabshah bint Kab, who was married to one of the sons of Abu Qatadah (radiallahu anhu), that: She poured water for Abu Qatadah (radiallahu anhu) to perform ablution. A cat came and drank the water, and he tilted the vessel for it. She started looking at it (in surprise) and he said: “O daughter of my brother, do you find it strange? The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: ‘They (cats) are not impure, they are of those who go around among you.'” [Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadeeth  No. 367. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

[Those who want more details on the issue of impurities should refer to the books of Fiqh (Jurisprudence), specifically the chapter on purification.]

So, in summary, the reason why the baby boy’s urine and the baby girl’s urine have different rulings might be because of the difference in the way Adam (alaihissalam) and Hawwa (radiallahu anhu) were created!

I think there’s nothing else to say to that except the statement of the mother of Maryam (radiallahu anha) when she found out that she delivered a girl:

“And the male is not like the female.” [Surah Aal-Imran (3) : 36]

Indeed.
