Heart Softeners, Life of a Muslim

Those whom the Prophets and Martyrs will envy…

Assalamu Alaikum.

Yes, there are people that the Prophets (alaihimissalaam) and the martyrs envy (in the good way (ghibtah), not the bad way (hasad).).

So, who are these special people, you ask?

Abu Muslim Al-Khawlani narrated that Muadh ibn Jabal (radiallahu anhu) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said: ‘Those who love each other for the sake of My Majesty shall be upon podiums of light, and they will be envied by the Prophets and the martyrs.'” [Jaami At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 2390. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani.]

And that’s not all.

Umar ibn al-Khattab (radiallahu anhu) reported the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as saying: There are people from the servants of Allah who are neither prophets nor martyrs; the prophets and martyrs will envy them on the Day of Resurrection for their rank from Allah, the Most High.

They (the people) asked: Tell us, Messenger of Allah, who are they? He replied: They are people who love one another in the spirit of Allah,  without having any mutual kinship and giving property to one. I swear by Allah, their faces will glow and they will be (sitting) in (pulpits of) light. They will have no fear (on the Day) when the people will have fear, and they will not grieve when the people will grieve.

He then recited this verse:

No doubt! Verily, the Auliyaa of Allah [i.e. those who believe in the Oneness of Allah and fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which he has forbidden), and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)], no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve. [Surah Yunus (10) : 62]

[Sunan Abee Dawood, Hadeeth No. 3527. Graded “sahih” (authentic) by Al-Albani. Note: For some strange reason, the grading of this hadeeth is missing from my copy of Sunan Abee Dawood so I had to check it out on Dorar.]

Dua and Dhikr, Shahaadah (Testimony of Faith)

An easy way to enjoy the Day of Arafah

Assalamu Alaikum.

So, tomorrow is the Big Day i.e the Day of Arafah.

Now, this day has many virtues and there are some acts that should be performed in it, including fasting – all the proofs for which were mentioned in this post.

There is one particular thing that is done on this day that was done by the Prophets (alaihimisalaam).

Amr ibn Shuaib narrated from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “The best of supplication is the supplication of the Day of Arafah. And the best of what I and the Prophets before me have said is: None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him belongs the Praise, and He is powerful over all things. (Lā ilāha illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, wa huwa `alā kulli shai’in qadīr).’” [Jaami At-Tirmidhi, Hadeeth No. 3585. Graded “hasan” (good) by Al-Albani.]

So, this Day is a great time to do dua (supplication) and the best dua is what was mentioned in the above hadeeth.

Here’s a nice poster with this hadeeth (with the word evening instead of day) and the dua:

This article mentions the points of benefits derived from this narration and also provides an audio of this dua.

Now, saying this dua is really easy. The problem is that very often, we lack the FEELING when saying any dua. You know what I mean. We repeat it with our mouths whilst our minds (and hearts) are a zillion miles away.

So, Arafah comes and we just repeat this dua – and we end up not feeling much enjoyment on this big day.

So, how can we get the feeling? Well, one way is by knowing what we’re going to get from saying this supplication.

So, what do we get?

Teensie-Weensie Tafsir Gems: The Greatest Blessing

Assalamu Alaikum.

Surah An-Nahl is all about the favours of Allah upon us. I had an entire post dedicated to the favours mentioned in this surah and the last tafsir gems post was also about this surah.

After I had posted the above, a sister, may Allah reward her greatly, sent me a nice little video by Shaikh Abdur Razzaq Al-Abbaad wherein he talks about this surah and mentions a blessing that I completely forgot to mention in my post!!!

What is that blessing, you ask? Well, it is the greatest blessing of Allah upon us and therefore the Surah starts with it:

The Event (the Hour or the punishment of disbelievers and polytheists or the Islamic laws or commandments), ordained by Allah will come to pass, so seek not to hasten it. Glorified and Exalted be He above all that they associate as partners with Him.

He sends down the angels with inspiration of His Command to whom of His slaves He pleases (saying): “Warn mankind that Laa ilaaha illa Ana (none has the right to be worshipped but I), so fear Me (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds). [Surah An-Nahl (16) : 1-2]

The blessing?

Hajj and Umrah, The Quran

The Best of Journeys – Part 4

Assalamu Alaikum.

(Here are Parts 1, 2 and 3.)

So, Hajj is almost upon us and I really need to finish this series.

This part focuses on what the Quran and Hadeeth have to say about Hajj. It also discusses the preparation that one needs to make before going to Hajj.

Now, the preparation part isn’t just for those going to Hajj this year. Rather it is also for those planning to go in future.

I would personally advise all those who have not gone for Hajj yet to really try to go next year (i.e. 2018) for the following reasons:

  • It’s going to be in the summer holidays for most people so you don’t have to worry about the children missing school.
  • As the years go by, Hajj will get earlier – which means it will get deeper into the summer. Listen, I’m from the Gulf and the recent summers (especially July) have been really bad. If this is the case of someone used to the heat, then what about those of you who are NOT used to the heat??? You’ll have to wait many years for Hajj to pass the summer season.
  • Sometimes, political issues could get one prevented from travelling to Saudi Arabia. Last year, the Iranians were banned from Hajj and this year the Qataris got banned from Saudi Arabia as well (but not Hajj though). No, I’m not siding with the Iranians or the Qataris (I’m from the UAE!!!). I’m just pointing out that unexpected things can stop a person from going to Hajj. If you are able to go, then go next year before something happens.

If you can’t afford it yet, then do lots of dua (supplication) to Allah asking Him to open the doors for you. After, He is the Provider.

Verily, Allah is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong. [Surah Adh-Dhaariyaat (51) : 58]

Teensie-Weensie Tafsir Gems: Not a change of topic

Assalamu Alaikum.

In Surah An-Nahl (which the previous post was all about), Allah says:

And the cattle, He has created them for you; in them there is warmth (warm clothing), and numerous benefits, and of them you eat. And wherein is beauty for you, when you bring them home in the evening, and as you lead them forth to pasture in the morning. And they carry your loads to a land that you could not reach except with great trouble to yourselves. Truly, your Lord is full of Kindness, Most Merciful.

And (He has created) horses, mules and donkeys, for you to ride and as an adornment. And He creates (other) things of which you have no knowledge.

And upon Allah is the responsibility to explain the Straight Path (i.e. Islamic Monotheism for mankind i.e. to show them legal and illegal, good and evil things, etc. so, whosoever accepts the guidance, it will be for his own benefit and whosoever goes astray, it will be for his own destruction), but there are ways that turn aside (such as Paganism, Judaism, Christianity, etc.). And had He willed, He would have guided you all (mankind).

[Surah An-Nahl (16) : 5-9]

Now, you may have noticed that the topic seems to jump from one thing to another in this set of verses. First, there is a discussion about cattle and other animals. And then the topic suddenly changes to the Straight Path.

However, in reality, there is no change in topic.

Imam Ibn Kathir (rahimahullah) stated in his explanation of Ayah 9:

“When Allah mentioned the animals which may be used for the purpose of physical journeys, He also referred to the moral, religious routes that people may follow. Often in the Quran there is a shift from physical or tangible things to beneficial spiritual and religious matters, as when Allah says,

(And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is Taqwa (piety, righteousness).) (2:197) And,

(O Children of Adam! We have granted clothing for you to cover yourselves, as well as for adornment; but the raiment of righteousness, that is better.) (7:26) Since Allah mentioned cattle and other such animals in this Surah, all of which are ridden or can be used in any way necessary, carrying people’s necessities for them to distant places and on difficult journeys – then He mentions the ways which people follow to try to reach Him, and explains that the right way is the one that does reach Him. He says:

(And it is up to Allah to show the right way.) This is like the Ayaat,

(And verily, this is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow the (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His path.) (6:153) and,

((Allah) said: “This is the way which will lead straight to Me.”) (15:41)

(And it is up to Allah to show the right way.) Mujahid said: “The true way is up to Allah.”

(And it is up to Allah to show the right way.) Al-Awfi said that Ibn Abbas said: “It is up to Allah to clarify, to explain the guidance and misguidance.” This was also reported by Ali bin Abi Talhah, and was also the opinion of Qatadah and Ad-Dahhak. Hence Allah said:

(But there are ways that stray.) meaning they deviate from the truth. Ibn Abbas and others said: “These are the different ways,” and various opinions and whims, such as Judaism, Christianity and Zoroastrianism. Ibn Masud recited it as (وَمِنْكُمْ جَائِرٌ) “But among you are those who stray. ” Then Allah tells us that all of that happens by His will and decree. He says:

(And had He willed, He would have guided you all.) And Allah says:

(If your Lord had willed, then all who are in the earth would have believed.) (10:99)

(And if your Lord had so willed, He could surely, have made humanity one Ummah, but they will not stop disagreeing. Except those for whom your Lord has granted mercy. And it is for this that He did create them; and the Word of your Lord has been fulfilled (i.e. His saying): “Surely, I shall fill Hell with Jinn and men all together.”) (11:118-119).”

So, as you can see the topic remains the same: routes or journeys. The animals part was about physical journeys and the guidance part was about the religious journey.

This is something to think about whilst we are reciting the Quran and come across what we perceive to be a shift in topic. In reality, it might be the same topic but often we don’t realise that, simply because many of us don’t spend enough time with the Book of Allah.

There’s half of this Ramadan left. So for those of you who haven’t spent much time with the Quran this month, there’s still time to rectify the situation.
